Older people living in West Lothian will be among 2,000 households across Great Britain receiving letters inviting them to apply for Pension Credit
as part of a new initiative launched by the Department for Work and Pensions to drive take-up of the means-tested benefit, which is worth more than £3,500 a year, on average.
Even a small award of just a few pence for Pension credit can provide access to a range of other benefits such as help with housing costs, Council Tax, heating bills and for those aged 75 or over, a free TV licence. The quickest way to check if you, or someone you know should claim, is to use the online Pension Credit calculator on GOV.UK here. Alternatively, pensioners can contact the Pension Credit helpline directly to make a claim on 0800 99 1234 - lines are open 8am to 6pm, Monday to Friday.
Sir Steve Webb, a former pensions minister who is now a partner at consultants LCP said: “A significant number of people who miss out on Pension Credit are actually already providing information about their income and needs to their local council to support a Housing Benefit claim.
