Any carer who earns even one penny over the £151 per week limit is expected to pay back their Carer's Allowance payments for that week
The Department for Work and Pensions is facing a storm of criticism as it has ordered 34,500 people to repay benefits, with fines reaching up to £20,000.
However, numerous beneficiaries argue that the regulations are not clear-cut. Highlighting the severity of the issue, the Express shared the story of a 92 year old woman with advanced Parkinson's Disease who received a demand to repay £7,000 due to the DWP's own overpayment error. More than 1,000 people were hit with a letter demanding repayment of Carer's Allowance of between £5,000 and £20,000 last year, which many people on low incomes simply cannot pay. It comes after a Lancashire man was forced to sell his home after the DWP prosecuted him under the Proceeds of Crime Act - a court order typically reserved for drug dealers and gangsters.
