A Labour Party MP has urged the Department for Work and Pensions to extend the Motability Scheme to include Attendance Allowance as well

The Department for Work and Pensions has received recommendations to broaden the scope of the Motability Scheme. Concerns have been raised, particularly by Labour Party MP Fred Thomas, about support for pensioners who acquire disabilities after reaching State Pension age and need adapted vehicles and mobility assistance.

In response, Sir Stephen Timms, Labour Party MP for East Ham, outlined the benefits of Attendance Allowance : "Attendance Allowance is a weekly benefit for those over State Pension age who require care or supervision as a result of a physical or mental disability." Sir Stephen Timms further explained that AA assists with the additional costs disabled individuals may face and highlighted its non-means-tested nature: "AA provides financial support towards the extra costs faced by disabled people. It is neither means-tested, nor based on National Insurance contributions paid and recipients can choose how they wish to spend it.", reports Birmingham Live.
