People on benefits get £10 extra for Christmas - a sum which has not increased since it was introduced more than 50 years ago
Charities have blasted the £10 ‘bonus’ given to people on benefits by the DWP as ‘negligible’ and called for it to be increased. It was brought in by the government in 1972 - and it hasn’t been increased ever since.
“For the rest of the year, those on the lowest incomes will still be unable to afford the basics needed to live and there is no government support for energy this winter. Families are facing a big crunch this winter with the Consumer Price Index inflation rate is still running high at 6.7 percent and food prices rising at 13.6 per cent in the year to August 2023.
Sarah White from national disability charity Sense said: “The rising cost of living is putting disabled people under enormous pressure. Unfortunately, this tiny £10 Christmas bonus is just another example of the Government demonstrating it doesn’t really understand the huge extra costs of being disabled.
