A sharp-eyed medic saved the life of a critically ill teenager by spotting 'something unusual' on an ultrasound. The teenager had been experiencing severe stomach pain and underwent multiple tests, but doctors were unable to determine the cause. However, a last-minute ultrasound revealed a rare condition called Meckel's Diverticulum with intussusception. The condition involves an abnormality of the small intestine.
An eagle-eyed medic saved the life of a critically ill teenager after spotting ‘something unusual’ on an ultrasound. George Bruce, from Uddingston, began experiencing excruciating pain in his stomach before being rushed to A&E by his worried parents when he was just 15. After undergoing a number of tests, doctors were baffled as to what was causing the teenager’s symptoms - with his loved ones told to prepare for the worst.
George said: “They took blood and I was given X-ray, CT and MRI scans, but nobody knew what it was. They repeatedly asked if I’d taken drugs or had swallowed anything sharp, even asking if my parents had been abusive. “They made notes of how often my parents visited or enquired about my condition.” The teenager spent a further two weeks in hospital as his health continued to deteriorate.
