As the UK braces for a 'quad-demic', Brits are being urged to take precautions as RSV hospitalisations continue to rise
The UK Health Security Agency issued a warning in its weekly update yesterday, with the anticipated 'tripledemic' now joined by an additional threat. Initially, medics were concerned about a combination of new Covid variants, flu and RSV overwhelming the NHS this winter but this has been further exacerbated by widespread outbreaks of the vomiting bug Norovirus.
The NHS points out that while RSV, or Respiratory syncytial virus, isn't too challenging to overcome, it can lead to severe lung infections like pneumonia or chest infections like bronchiolitis in both infants and adults. A common symptom of RSV is feeling unusually hot on your chest or back, often accompanied by sweating and shivering. Most people, including children, can recover from RSV within a week or two with minimal intervention, as most home treatments focus on easing the patient's comfort and tackling symptoms individually. The NHS has highlighted that these infections are incredibly common, stating: "Almost all children get them at least once before they're 2 years old.
