A recent earthquake warning test in California highlights the ongoing threat of a major earthquake striking the Pacific coast. The text focuses on residents' experiences, preparedness measures, and the history of seismic activity in the region.
There are fears that sooner or later, the entire Pacific coast of northern California , Oregon and Washington is due to suffer a 'big one'. San Francisco’s Outdoor Public Warning System, which has been offline since 2019 when it was slated for repairs and upgrades until funding fell through due to the Covid pandemic, was tested on August 24th.
If her home was in Kansas or Oklahoma she would have to get used to dealing with tornadoes, hurrying to shelters beneath a person’s home and coming together to clean up the mess when one of those “twisters” strikes – wrecking towns and taking lives. She added: “And I’d much rather live here in a small town, remote and go through a major earthquake. We know what to do and help each other. It’s a great community.” Titus, a businesswoman and mother of three who once owned the local paper, lives in Ferndale, a town located 250 miles from San Francisco and close to the Oregon border. It is 30 miles from what’s called the Mendocino triple junction, the place where three tectonic plates – the Pacific, the North America and the Juan de Fuca – meet. It marks the end of the famous San Andreas Fault, the location of many earthquakes over the years, including the 1906 San Francisco quake, which was measured at an estimated 7.8 on the Richter scale and killed at least 3,000 people. The warning was quickly canceled and people in Humboldt County, in which Ferndale is located, reported little damage. “I think we dodged a bullet,” said Titus, in a video she posted online. She had been in Ferndale when three quakes hit in 1992, all in the space of 24 hours. They damaged homes and businesses and injured 350 people.
