The East Lancashire Railway is providing festive train rides throughout the Christmas and New Year period, including special offers on Boxing Day and New Year's Day. The railway is also hosting a special open day on January 18th to celebrate 200 years of train travel.
East Lancashire Railway is offering a festive spin to its services over Christmas and New Year - and there’s still time to book tickets. The heritage train service will operate on selected dates in the Twixmas period, and into January. Passengers can ride on a steam train for 12 miles through the scenic Irwell Valley, with seven stops along the way.
One magical way to spend Boxing Day is with a ride on a steam train, allowing you to enjoy the beautiful countryside from the comfort of your carriage. To add some cheer to the journey, ELR is offering every visitor travelling on the train a mince pie (while stocks last). Then on New Year's Day, ELR is offering a free whiskey chaser for any adult who purchases a hot drink on board (limited to one per customer while stocks last). Trains depart from 10am on both Boxing Day and New Year's Day and there’s still availability. One day rover tickets start from £18.50 for adults and £11 for children aged 3-17, while one full line return tickets start from £17 for adults and £10.50 for children aged 3-17. Looking further ahead, on January 18 ELR will host an open day for its first Railway 200 event of the year, marking 200 years of train travel. It will feature an impressive range of heritage steam and diesel locomotives, including the Andrew Barclay, 1969 ‘Jane Derbyshire’ and the MSC 4002 ‘Arundel Castle’. A shuttle service will operate with two heritage Mark 1 carriages between Bury and Summerseat throughout the day. But perhaps the most exciting part of the day is you can sign up for a taster driver experience where you take the controls under expert guidance between Bury Station, Platform 2 and Baron Street Gates, traversing rare track (for a £15 supplement). The open day also includes cab access, where you can go behind the scenes and take a look inside the cabs of some of ELR’s heritage diesel locomotive
