Maidenhill Primary, which opened in 2019, is set to increase its capacity from 420 pupils to 540 as new homes have been built 'significantly faster' than expected.

Four extra classrooms are set to be provided at a Newton Mearns primary school as part of an estimated £2.6m plan to meet increased demand for places.

Mr Ratter said it was “not the case” that children in the catchment didn’t have places. He added four classrooms are planned as the council has a duty to “ensure we are not spending over and above what we would need”.

A council report stated Maidenhill Primary is currently over its 420 capacity, with a roll of 448 pupils. Schools can operate above capacity “for short periods of time”, it added, but projections indicate there will be a need to operate above capacity for “several years”.
