From 2017/18 to 2021/22, 26 patients with an eating disorder had to travel outside of NI to access specialist hospital treatment.
People in Northern Ireland with eating disorders are being forced to fly outside of the country to access specialist hospital treatment, it has emerged.
The charity’s review of the research evidence found that intensive community and day treatments can provide the same outcomes as inpatient care, are preferable to patients and families, and can be provided at much lower cost than inpatient care. Beat is calling on the Northern Ireland Executive and HSC Northern Ireland to ensure that patients of all ages in all parts of the country can access intensive community and day treatment.
"Recovering from an eating disorder can be a lengthy and challenging process – people shouldn’t have the added anxieties of booking flights, missing work or university or arranging childcare to contend with. Ensuring that people with eating disorders can access proper care while continuing to live at home is essential to ensuring their speedy recovery and should be a priority for the NI Executive.
In a statement, the Department of Health said the Mental Health Strategy 2021-2031 includes commitments to ensure there are specialist interventions available to those who need them and to enhance the regional eating disorder service. "The average treatment for therapeutic intervention within the specialist Eating Disorder Service currently is two years. Some patients, owing to their status as ‘severe’, fall outside these prescribed treatment models. The current intensive day facilities in Belfast and South Eastern Trusts support up to four patients at a time. To regionalise this service would allow for up ten patients .
