Industry experts have warned the price of the staple brekky item could almost double if a plan to phase out caged eggs is accelerated, in another blow to consumers struggling with the cost of living crisis.
Agriculture ministers will meet on Thursday to review the Australian Animal Welfare Standards and Guidelines for Poultry, which currently recommends phasing out caged eggs in 2046.
Egg producers have scrambled to adapt to a changing market but the infrastructure required for caged free eggs comes with a hefty price tag of $2 to $4 million. The president of the Commercial Egg Producers of WA Ian Wilson attributed the supply issue to ongoing uncertainty for egg farmers.
