A couple in their twilight years were rescued from their car after it became submerged in floodwater near Chulmleigh, Devon. Fire crews used a boat and water safety gear to reach the couple and bring them to safety.
An elderly couple have been rescued after becoming trapped inside their car during a flood, the fire service has said. Specialist rescue crews were deployed to Bridge Reeve, near Chulmleigh, in Devon , at about 10:50 GMT. Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue (DSFRS) said the car had become 'partly submerged in flood water'. Upon arrival it said the crew found 'the water had already reached the door handles and was rising both inside and outside the vehicle'.
'Specialist rescue crews used a boat and water safety gear to rescue both occupants who were uninjured but left in the hands of ambulance crews to be checked over,' DSFRS added.It said: 'Even shallow moving water can sweep you off your feet, there may be hidden dangers like open drains, damaged road surfaces, submerged debris, or deep channels. 'Never drive through floodwater, vehicles can become stuck and even swept away in just 30cm of flowing water
