The move to charge electric motorists could be one of many policies across the energy sector that would be designed to help fill the £55bn hole in public finances along with the potential to slap aHowever, any tax grabbing polices from the green sector are likely to be accompanied by the promise of huge investment into renewable energies, including wind farms, nuclear power and battery factories, as Mr Hunt seeks to secure the Government’s aim to make the UK energy secure.

There are now more than one million electric cars on the roads that are currently not subject to car tax. While EVs priced over £40,000 are subject to first year “premium tax”, they are VED exempt from the £165 a year charge for petrol and diesel cars. The trade body, Energy UK, which lobbies Government on behalf of energy giants, claimed Ms Truss’s revenue cap risked being even more expensive than the 25 per cent levy on oil and gas producers.
