Liverpool star Luis Diaz's father was rescued on November 9 after being kidnapped and held hostage by the ELN for 12 days
The leader of the National Liberation Army of Colombia , the group that kidnapped the parents of Luis Diaz, has tried to justify holding the Liverpool star’s father hostage.
Mr Diaz was released to a delegation composed of officials from the United Nations and the Catholic Church on November 9, despite the group’s leadership demanding his immediate release days earlier. And the leader of the ELN, Antonio Garcia, has insisted that the group isn't breaching that ceasefire by kidnapping people - and tried to justify holding people hostage for ransom because it was "poor".
Garcia, who had previously claimed that targeting the Liverpool star's father was an error, also claimed, via the BBC, that the ELN is a "poor organisation" and does not resort to drug smuggling to finance itself. Instead, the group’s units are under orders to "carry out military operations to raise funds” to finance its operations, he suggested.
