Part of the road was closed off
Emergency services descended on a busy Tameside street following a gas leak. Stockport Road, in Ashton-under-Lyne, was closed this afternoon while fire crews and Cadent gas engineers checked the scene.
The Manchester Evening News understands the gas leak came from a kebab shop. A Cadent spokesperson said: "Our engineers were called in after reports of a smell of gas inside a property. We arrived on-site quickly and have everything under control. "We are checking adjoining properties as routine and liaising with police and the fire service with regards to reopening the road. They took an understandable safety-first approach by closing it.
"Incidents like this are a reminder of the importance of acting immediately if you smell gas - call the national gas emergency service, day or night, on 0800 111 999. All calls are recorded and may be monitored."
