The energy sector faces “an extinction-level event” if legal actions to recoup billions in ‘secret’ commission fees are successful, a leading industry figure has told theipaper 🔴 Exclusive DavidParsley50
revealed that some suppliers could be forced by courts to refund business customers after commissions led to their bills rising by as much as two times the core tariff charged by the energy giants.
“While many people believe the big players like Shell and British Gas are immune to financial shocks, what is not widely understood is that the energy supply divisions of these giants are not legally permitted to be bailed out by the oil and gas producing side of their businesses. “Current market conditions may mean that suppliers are starting to make a return to profit, but our impression is that supply retail is no longer considered to be an attractive proposition for investors, and Ofgem is walking a very fine line between holding suppliers to account and preventing a mass exodus from the market. The emergence of these class actions could well be the turning point.”
