Man Utd manager Erik ten Hag has refused to close the door on further additions before the transfer window closes.
With Roy Keane sat to his left and Gary Neville sat opposite him, Jose Mourinho, following Manchester United's 1-1 draw with Liverpool in October 2019, set about addressing Marcus Rashford's limitations as a centre-forward.
Mourinho's opinion of Rashford's best position has been echoed up and down the land ever since. He has produced the best of his football in United colours on the left and that is where he plundered most of his goals from last season.Rashford's career was, of course, resurrected by Erik ten Hag last term. He scored 30 goals in all competitions, becoming the first United player to do so since Robin van Persie a decade earlier.
Ten Hag's only other option was Jadon Sancho, who played as a false-nine for much of pre-season, and that would have resulted in Alejandro Garnacho starting on the bench. The latter was worthy of being awarded a starting berth after a starring role in United's 3-1 win over RC Lens in their penultimate pre-season friendly nine days earlier.
With Martial proving brittle, Rashford wasted as a central striker and Sancho, despite offering flashes of his capabilities, not an out-and-out striker, United may need to add another body to their pool of forwards before the transfer window shuts in a fortnight's time. As reported by the Manchester Evening News last month, Ten Hag is open to adding another forward to his squad beyond the addition of Hojlund, who is considered the elite-level striker that United craved.
United could do with offloading him before sourcing another striker, but which clubs are likely to submit attractive bids for a player who can't remain fit? You'd do well to find a handful. Martial's position does throw the biggest caveat into the search for another forward.
