Escape the city on a New Year’s Day walk near Glasgow - If you’re looking to clear your head as the new year begins here’s a handy list of walks not far from Glasgow . If you have a hangover to clear or one of your New Year’s resolutions is to do more exercise, then a gentle walk on the first of January could be a nice way to ease into 2025. Here is a selection of walk options in or a short drive from the city where you can find castles, woods, lakes, waterfalls and fantastic viewpoints.

Linn Park If you don’t have a car then a wander through Linn Park could be a good option – still within the city but feels like you’re on a country walk along the wooded riverside. Be sure to get a look at the ‘Linn’ which is the waterfall halfway along the river walkway. Mugdock Park A variety of walking and cycling trails lead you around Mugdock Park just next to Milngavie. With historical landmarks such as Mugdock Castle and Second World War command post amongst the woods, hills and lakes, there’s something to interest all tastes. The Stables Tearoom will be open from 11am to 4pm if the fresh air alone doesn’t revive you. Clydeside Walk from New Lanark An hour’s drive from Glasgow to the New Lanark Mill Village, the visitor centre will be closed but there’s a scenic walk along the Clyde with four waterfalls which sit amongst lush woodlands. As a low-level route along the river, it’s a leisurely stroll suitable for all fitness levels. Chatelherault Country Park If you’d like less of a drive, then take a look at Chatelheraut Country Park which sits just between Hamilton and Motherwell. The visitor centre and cafe housed within the grand former hunting lodge and summer house will be closed but the many walkways around the park will still be accessible. With free parking and plenty of space for dogs children to run around and an adventure playpark, it’s a good option for families or dog walker
