Glasgow isn't short of pubs but some of the best boozers across the city have disappeared from our streets over the years. Since we all enjoy a wee tipple on Hogmanay, some of these pubs were go-to choices when it came to seeing in the New Year. Sadly, they're no longer - but we'll always have our memories. Sparkles This Sauchiehall Street watering hole changed names many times over the years, though most would probably remember it as Sparkles. Cheap as chips, pretty tacky, and the perfect way to see in the New Year. While Sparkles itself is long gone, the building still stands and is open as the Priory Bar today. Sylvesters Developed into homes in the early ‘00s, Sylvesters was where a whole generation of Glaswegians probably had their first drink. Introducing family Tuesdays in the early ‘80s, the spot earned a reputation as a gathering space of sorts. This made it the perfect boozer for New Year’s, with plenty of others to mix with. The Old Eagle Inn In the railway arches of the old St Enoch Station, this pub became a true Glasgow institution. With a reputation for serving the under agers, it was one of the first Glasgow pubs to serve Carlsberg Export and the German draught lager Holsten. Sadly, it disappeared along with the Hotel and Station. The Muscular Arms Now open as Yo Sushi, Glasgow’s ‘pop art pub’ was considered the first venue in the city for trendy folks. Decorated with the front half of a 1936 Chrysler car, there were also superhero characters adorning most of the walls. Only the coolest of Glaswegians would have spent their Hogmanay here. The Burns Howff Once one of the popular pubs in Glasgow, this West Regent Street spot was the city’s ‘original music mecca’.
