The empty seats at the end told the story of Everton’s opening game of the season. The soundtrack to the final minutes only made it more painful.
That sentiment will resonate for the next week in more ways than one. As dreams of better things to come turned into a nightmare on Saturday afternoon, Ashley Young dragged back his tormentor Kauro Mitoma because it was the only way he could stop the winger from adding to Everton’s misery. This had the appearance of a promising summer for the Blues. The squad is better than last season, there is certainly more attacking diversity within it and new signings made an impact in friendlies it was hoped would be carried through to this poignant campaign.

The opening goal came as both sides threatened and at the start of the second half the Blues had legitimate claims to a penalty that would have provided Calvert-Lewin with an opportunity to level from 12 yards.
