She said in a witness statement that editors were “given an enormous amount of freedom and responsibility” to “take editorial decisions and make the right judgments,” adding: “As chief executive and on a daily basis I did not know about, let alone interfere with, those decisions and judgements.” “Despite our robust governance systems, a number of people on the editorial side of the national titles concealed their unlawful activities from me and from other colleagues,” she added.
She issued a “categorical” denial of lying to or misleading the Leveson Inquiry, adding that she “only became aware of them after I left the company” of allegations of unlawful activity., representing the Duke of Sussex and others, Ms Bailey told the court it was “pretty devastating” hearing of alleged illegal activities at the newspaper, adding: “I am deeply regretful and I do apologise on behalf of the company. I hope that people will understand that I had no knowledge of these activities.
