Just over half the number of insects were spotted this year compared to last year - the lowest number ever recorded in the 14-year history of the count.
Not everyone is fond of insects, in fact, many people would shudder at the thought of even touching one.These colourful winged visitors to our gardens are almost universally welcomed, with many believing them to be a sign of good luck, or even a representation of the soul of a loved one.
It's believed that a combination of wet weather and low temperatures have dramatically impacted populations, with just over half the number of insects spotted this year compared to last year - the lowest in the history of the count. “The lack of butterflies this year is a warning sign to us all. Nature is sounding the alarm and we must listen. Butterflies are a key indicator species. When they are in trouble we know the wider environment is in trouble too,” Dr Hoare continued.
