The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has announced increased Pension Credit payments for disabled pensioners and those receiving Carer's Allowance. They are urging eligible individuals to claim the benefit, estimating that millions are missing out on potential financial support.

The Department for Work and Pensions ( DWP ) has announced that people of State Pension age on low incomes who receive Attendance Allowance or certain levels of Disability Living Allowance (DLA), Personal Independence Payment (PIP), or Adult Disability Payment (ADP) may be entitled to extra Pension Credit of £82.90 per week. This equates to £331.60 every four-week pay period.

Similar increases apply to couples claiming Pension Credit where both are over 66 and both receive qualifying disability benefits. The DWP also confirmed that those paid Carer's Allowance may be eligible for an extra weekly Pension Credit of £46.40. This applies even if they are not currently receiving Carer's Allowance or are receiving a lower amount due to another benefit, such as State Pension.Around 1.4 million older people in Great Britain currently receive Pension Credit, which the DWP estimates can provide an average of £4,200 in support over the year. However, the DWP suggests 7.6 million eligible pensioners are not claiming the benefit they are entitled to. Some older people mistakenly believe they are ineligible due to savings or home ownership. Pension Credit tops up weekly income to a guaranteed minimum of £218.15 for single pensioners or £332.95 for couples. It is a tax-free payment for those who qualify based on their income and savings. The Pension Credit calculator on GOV.UK allows individuals to quickly check their eligibility and estimate potential benefits.Alternatively, pensioners can contact the Pension Credit helpline on 0800 99 1234. Other support is available through various organisations. The DWP also clarified that 'mixed-age couples' - where one partner is of State Pension age and the other is not - are considered 'working-age' couples when checking eligibility for means-tested benefits. They can only claim Pension Credit or pension-age Housing Benefit once both partners reach State Pension age.
