Adam Johnson's aunt Kari has backed Nottinghamshire Live's campaign for neck guards to be mandatory in ice hockey
The family of tragic ice hockey star Adam Johnson have backed Nottinghamshire Live's campaign for neck guards to be mandatory in the sport. Adam's aunt Kari Johnson was speaking after her nephew suffered a fatal cut to his neck while playing for Nottingham Panthers.
Now, Ms Johnson has said she backs our calls. She said: "I do think that neck guards would be a major plus just because those skate blades are like razor blades - they are so sharp."It would be like any other kind of equipment. Start them out young and then it is just like anything else, everyone gets used to it.
But following the opening, she filed a 'Prevention of further death report' and sent it to Ice Hockey UK, the English Ice Hockey Association as well as the Chief Coroner, Adam's family, the Sports Minister Stuart Andrew and the International Ice Hockey Federation . "In due course the inquest will consider whether the use of a neck guard or protector could have prevented Mr Johnson’s death. At this stage in my investigation however, I am sufficiently concerned that deaths may occur in the future if neck guards or protectors are not worn."
