The railway line between Manchester and Rochdale has now reopened
New video footage has revealed the true scale of a massive engineering operation to demolish and rebuild a bridge over the M62 near Rochdale .
Engineers excavated more than 50,000 tonnes of earth to create a 'safe and bespoke worksite' next to the motorway to assemble the new bridge. Two 42-metre, 70-tonne steel beams were fabricated in Ireland and travelled more than 200 miles by land and sea to the site. Olivia Boland, Network Rail sponsor, said: “I’d like to thank rail passengers, motorists and people living along diversionary routes for their patience during this work. I know that the bridge replacement work was very disruptive to your travel and daily lives, and I really appreciate that everyone followed our advice during the work.
Network Rail worked closely with National Highways and train operator, Northern, throughout the project.
