The Seward Highway was closed for about six hours on Sunday afternoon and evening after a deadly vehicle collision near the turnoff to Whittier, about 40 miles south of Anchorage.

According to Alaska State Troopers, a Chevrolet S-10 traveling northbound on the highway crossed the centerline and struck another pickup truck, killing the S-10 driver, a little after 2 p.m. Sunday. Troopers said the collision between the pickups happened between Ingram Creek and the “Welcome to Kenai” sign, near milepost 75. Girdwood Fire and Cooper Landing Emergency Services responded.
The driver of the S-10 died at the scene; two people in the pickup were taken to an Anchorage hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.The crash is under investigation. Cooper Landing Emergency Services had responded a day earlier to a vehicle that went partway down a ravine hundreds of feet deep at Seward Highway milepost 55. All four occupants were expected to survive.
