Michael Platt, 42, a father of three, has been sentenced to two years in prison for attempting to smuggle nearly £100,000 worth of cannabis into the UK through Manchester Airport. Platt accepted a £10,000 payment and a holiday in Thailand in exchange for the illegal act.
Michael Platt, 42, has been jailed for two years after being caught out when he arrived at Manchester Airport . Platt, a father-of-three, had been offered £10,000 as well as a holiday to Phuket in Thailand, if he tried to smuggle cannabis through customs on his way home.
Platt told the officers that he had been away ‘doing family stuff’, and that his luggage contained ‘mainly clothes’. He was asked for the code for his suitcase. Officers forced open the case and discovered 24 kilos of cannabis, worth £96,000 at wholesale value. He was arrested and refused to give police the PIN number to his mobile phone.
She said that Platt has recently suffered tragedies including the passing of his ex-partner and a close friend. Ms Shaw said Platt had ‘struggled to cope’, and became an alcoholic and struggled with mental health.
