Regular break-ins and tall weeds are among the issues reported at the Mapperley Community Centre
The former manager of a Nottingham community centre fears his old building has been "left to rot" since the keys were handed back to the city council. Phil Merry, who used to run the Mapperley Community Centre, says regular break-ins and rampant weeds are among the issues at the Woodborough Road building.
The city council then eventually said that eviction was "never an option". Instead, Mr Merry said the council was keen to negotiate on the signing of a new lease which would have moved the Mapperley Community Association on to a commercial level of rent, set at £8,000 a year, compared to the previous peppercorn rent.
"I don't understand what they have achieved by taking that building off us. My wife has been up ladders, cleaning windows, weeding, and now the council have taken it from us and left it to rot."
