The Balearic Islands' government is facing backlash on its proposals to increase tourist taxes
Hotel leaders in the Balearic Islands have slammed proposals to increase tourist taxes over fears it could put off holidaymakers. The Ibiza and Formentera Hotel Federation branded the increase as “absurd” at an annual assembly held this week.
The president of the federation, Ana Gordillo, urged members to “make more noise” against the increase, which was recently announced by the Balearic government. She warned that “There will not be more tourists in winter and fewer tourists in summer,” Majorca Daily Bulletin reports. The federation’s concerns come after months of ongoing debate about tourism in the Balearic Islands and other popular Spanish holiday destinations. Throughout the spring and summer demonstrations have been held across Majorca, Menorca and Ibiza against mass-tourism, with residents voicing concerns over the impact of tourism on local infrastructure and holiday rentals on housing prices.
But hotel leaders fear it will stop tourists from visiting the islands. At the meeting they also addressed claims that the islands had experienced “saturation and overcrowding”. They reported that repeat customers described the island as “emptier” this year. Ms Gordillo said the concept of saturation could be due to “infrastructures that need to be improved”, like parking and public transport. She stated that there other problems that need to be “eradicated” such as a lack of housing.
