The Department for Communities urges individuals in Northern Ireland receiving tax credits to apply for Universal Credit before the April 2025 deadline, as tax credits will end and UC will become the sole source of financial assistance.
A final warning has been issued to individuals in Northern Ireland who currently receive tax credits, urging them to transition to Universal Credit (UC) before the deadline in April 2025. The Department for Communities has emphasized the importance of this shift, as tax credits will cease to be available after that date.
Recipients still relying on Tax Credits who have received a Migration Notice have a three-month window from the date of their letter to submit a UC claim to ensure continued financial assistance. \Universal Credit has been operational in Northern Ireland since September 2017, replacing new applications for Income Support, income-based Jobseeker's Allowance, income-related Employment and Support Allowance, Housing Benefit (rental), and tax credits. The 'Move to UC' initiative aims to transfer individuals who are currently receiving these benefits and tax credits to the Universal Credit system. \The Department is strongly encouraging Tax Credits recipients who believe they might not qualify for UC to seek the available advice and support. Communities Minister Gordon Lyons stated, 'It is crucial that Tax Credits recipients take immediate action as all migration notice letters have been distributed. If someone decides not to 'Move to UC,' their financial assistance will terminate when Tax Credits end in April 2025.' He further emphasized, 'Universal Credit is a payment intended for individuals on low incomes or those unemployed. My Department is committed to ensuring people receive the financial support they are entitled to. We provide assistance through our dedicated telephone team, face-to-face support at local Jobs and Benefits offices, and online information at nidirect. People can also consult independent welfare advice on the Move to UC.
