This article explores the challenges of maintaining fulfilling friendships in a busy life and offers strategies for prioritizing them effectively.
In order to feel fulfilled in my friendships, I need different aspects of my life reflected. I wish we could see each other more frequently—a friend of mine sighed. A twinge of guilt ran through me. This is a friend I see around once a month, and although I would like to see more of her, the logistics aren't in our favor. For a start, we live in opposite ends of the city.
I’m not sure whether it is a “London thing”, but there is an illusion that we live in one place and therefore it must be relatively easy to see one’s friends, while the reality is that it often takes up to 90 minutes to get to where we need to be. In contrast, my sister who lives in the centre of Barcelona travels a maximum of fifteen minutes to see her friends. While I’d love to see certain friends more often, the juggle of work, dating, gym, family commitments and my broader social circle means that it often feels like I’m constantly failing at the balance of it. Over the last year, I’ve been thinking about what needs to change, and how to make that part of the natural evolution of a friendship rather than creating more work. In the coming year, I’d like to reach a place where The first is being honest with myself about what my priorities are, and how these rarely remain static, fixed things. Like most busy people, I feel guilty most of the time around my friendships. Am I giving them enough attention? Am I being? Should I be spending more time with them? What is the right amount of time? The reality is that there is never enough time with the people you love, but what we can change is being able to mindfully enjoy the time we spend with them, and finding other ways to stay present in each other’s lives. That might mean having a long phone call in place of being able to meet, and recognising that some friendships aren’t about quantity but about the quality of time spent together
