Officials in Snohomish County are warning residents to properly dispose of batteries and other items after a close call at a local transfer station.

Snohomish County Public Works shared vide on X showing a fire that erupted at one of the county's transfer stations after hours. In the video, you can see a pile of what appears to be smoldering trash and then after a few seconds, flames burst out from the pile. There were no injuries or damage as a result of the fire, however, Public Works officials are reminding residents that batteries and other combustible items are considered hazardous waste and cannot go in the regular trash.

Household hazardous waste items are products containing corrosive, toxic, ignitable, or reactive ingredients, such as oil-based paints, cleaners, oils, batteries, and pesticides. Improperly disposing of those items can pollute the environment and pose a threat to human health, according to officials.
