The UK’s skies won’t be as bright as normal on Bonfire Night as many fireworks events are axed amid the cost of living crisis 🧨️
‘The cost of delivering the event has escalated every year and to host large bonfire events we would have to plug the shortfall by diverting parks funding away from essential park services.’
Liverpool City Council also cited the cost of living in its decision to cancel its waterfront firework display that normally draws in up to 50,000 people. While many of London’s displays are still set to go ahead, the capital still hasn’t escaped financial concerns. Hackney Council is cancelling its fireworks display in Clissold Park over ‘rising inflation and cost pressures’.Many believed fireworks are ‘a total waste of money when families are going hungry’.But others were disappointed, arguing it was ‘stealing more joy’ at a difficult time for the nation.
Some argued cancelling displays would leave more people setting off their own fireworks, resulting in more accidents.
