First piece of M6 motorway opened in Preston had no speed limit and was designed prevent driver boredom
Forming part of the motorway network dubbed the 'Backbone of Britain', the M6 - the UK's longest motorway - has its foundation stone in the heart of Lancashire.
Designed as a solution to relieve tailbacks and congestion on the A6 in Preston, the bypass was seen as an experiment for the future of motorway construction. Lancashire County Council surveyor James Drake designed and engineered the eight-and-quarter-mile section, costing nearly £3million. "The national motorways in general and the Preston Bypass in particular are designed to enable traffic to travel safely at high speeds, and to minimise the chance of accidents arising from bad driving."
