This week will mark five years since Britain officially exited the European Union after years of negotiation
This week marks the fifth anniversary of Britain's official departure from the European Union . On January 31, 2020, the UK made a historic move by becoming the only member state to exit the economic bloc.
The process was initiated when former Prime Minister David Cameron set a date for the referendum in February 2016. This led to a period of campaigning from both pro and anti-EU factions until the nation cast their votes on June 23 that year. The key issues debated during the referendum included the economy, immigration, sovereignty, border and water controls, as well as security and trade deals for the UK. A total of 33,577,342 votes were cast, with 52 per cent voting to leave the EU and 48 per cent choosing to remain.
The negotiations surrounding the UK's departure from the union have resulted in new rules for UK citizens and businesses. These changes include new checks at borders, such as safety checks and customs declarations, some restrictions on certain UK animal food products, limitations on free movement for UK citizens in the EU, and the requirement for UK nationals to obtain a visa for stays longer than 90 days in the EU.
Other stipulations include the UK gaining greater control over its own waters, reports the Manchester Evening News.
