The Met Office has issued dozens of flood alerts for Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire as heavy rain and high winds cause widespread disruption. Residents are urged to protect their property and stay safe.

Dozens of flood alerts have been issued across Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire as the Met Office warns people to protect their property. Heavy rain on New Year's Eve and on New Year's Day has led to a number of warnings being issued to start 2025. The Met Office also warned of the possibility of power cuts and a chance of injuries and 'danger to life' from flying debris as the rain is accompanied by high winds.

A Met Office spokesperson said: 'Prepare to protect your property and people from injury. 'Check for loose items outside your home and plan how you could secure them. Items include bins, garden furniture, trampolines, tents, sheds and fences. 'Give yourself the best chance of avoiding delays by checking road conditions if driving, or bus and train timetables, amending your travel plans if necessary. Be prepared for weather warnings to change quickly. When a weather warning is issued, the Met Office recommends staying up to date with the weather forecast in your area.' There are also three flood warnings in place for parts of Derbyshire at Peakshole Water at Castleton, the River Goyt at Whaley Bridge and the River Etherow at Charlesworth and Melandra. The warning means flooding is expected in these areas. Yellow weather warnings for rain and wind are expected to remain in place until 11am and 3pm on Wednesday, January 1. The Met Office has warned that these conditions could cause a 'danger to life' and people should stay out of floodwater
