The UK is facing potential for significant river flooding and further snow as the start of 2025 continues to be marked by unsettled weather. Heavy snow and rain on Sunday, January 5, already led to flooding in Nottinghamshire. The Met Office and Environment Agency have issued warnings for continued disruption throughout the week, with warnings in place for Tuesday, January 6. Ice is also a potential hazard, with temperatures expected to drop to around -1C in Nottingham.
Warnings have been issued for "significant river flooding" and the potential for further snow as the weather continues to provide an eventful start to 2025. Heavy snow and rain on Sunday, January 5, has already led to flooding in a number of spots across Nottinghamshire.
Ice could also pose a problem on Monday evening and into Tuesday, January 7, with temperatures expected to plummet. They are expected to fall to around -1C in Nottingham and even lower in rural spots. “Icy stretches which develop overnight as a result of these showers, or the recent wet conditions, could bring some disruption to travel. In addition to the ice, we could see snow accumulations of a few cm above 200 metres, with a chance of greater than 5 cm above 200 metres in Wales. The heaviest snow showers may also produce temporary accumulations of 0-2 cm at low levels. It is not possible to say exactly where this snow might fall, so it’s important that people are prepared.
“Environment Agency teams continue to be out on the ground, operating flood defences, taking action to reduce the impact of flooding, issuing flood warnings and supporting those communities affected. People should search ‘check my flood risk’, sign up for free flood warnings, and keep up to date with the latest situation at @EnvAgency on X.”
