The announcement this week that Council Tax rates are to be frozen was made by the First Minister in a bid to help people manage their stretched finances but the measure came as a complete surprise to Conservatives and Lib Dems in Perth and Kinross Council.
Perth and Kinross Conservative and Lib Dem councillors have reacted with equal anguish at a decision from the Scottish Government this week to freeze Council Tax rates.
It was added that the Scottish Government will “fully fund the freeze” to ensure councils can maintain their services. “That promise has been well and truly shredded with this announcement and there is much anger among the local authorities at the manner in which this announcement has been made and what it means for local decision making.”
Scottish Liberal Democrats’ local government spokesperson, Cllr Peter Barrett, condemned the move as “treating local government with contempt and riding rough-shod over the Verity House Agreement.” “We have repeatedly been told by the Scottish Government that there is no more money. Are we now to believe there are hundreds of millions of pounds for a freeze?”
