According to a press release from the National Park Service, the Foraker Fire was discovered using remote sensing on June 21 near the Foraker River drainage on the south side of the Alaska Range.
TALKEETNA, Alaska - Denali National Park officials are alerting visitors that the Foraker Fire is now within park boundaries.
That area is one known as a Limited Fire Management Option which maintains natural ecological processes. The Bureau of Land Management’s Alaska Fire Service will monitor the fire and deploy personnel as needed. The fire is estimated to be about five acres in size and is fueled by black spruce and tundra. Visitors to the park may encounter poor air quality from this and other fires across the state. Air quality advisories, if issued by the Alaska Department of Economic Conservation, will be posted in the park for visitors to see.
Although this fire is believed to have started with a lightning strike, human-caused wildfires account for 87% of wildfires nationwide, according to the NPS. The public is reminded to be aware of any burn restrictions in their area and to take extra precautions before going into areas with known fire dangers.
