The Foreign Office has updated its travel advice for holidaymakers after incidents relating to counterfeit alcohol

The UK Foreign Office has issued a fresh warning for those planning a holiday to Turkey. The safety advice has been updated following reports of people dying or falling seriously ill after consuming illegally produced local spirits.

The Foreign Office, which provides travel updates for some 226 countries and nations, is urging all holidaymakers travelling to Turkey from the UK to only consume alcohol purchased from licensed liquor stores and bars, and to check labels and bottle seals for tampering. This comes in the wake of reports that over 100 people have died after drinking counterfeit alcohol in Turkey recently.

The Foreign Office website states: "In Turkey, including Ankara and Istanbul, people have died or suffered serious illness after drinking illegally produced local spirits and counterfeit bottles of branded alcohol."Read more: Ryanair passengers slam 'ridiculous' new boarding rule after 'no indication'

To stay safe, they advise: "buy alcoholic beverages only from licensed liquor stores, buy drinks only at licensed bars and hotels, avoid home-made alcoholic drinks, check bottle seals are intact, check labels for poor print quality or incorrect spelling." Additionally, the Foreign Office has updated their travel advice for those visiting Turkey during the holy month of Ramadan, expected to start on February 28 or March 1 and last for 29 or 30 days. The advice cautions that certain activities may cause offence to locals, reports Wales Online.
