Work is underway to transform the former Marks and Spencer building in Newark into almost 30 homes. The site, which has been empty since 2019, will also feature two new store units. The new homes are expected to be ready by summer 2025 and are part of the Newark Town Board's efforts to revitalize the town.
Work is continuing on the former Marks and Spencer building in Newark , which will be transformed into almost 30 homes. The Stodman Street site has been empty since the business closed its doors in 2019, with works beginning in 2023 to create two new store units as well as 29 homes.
For months visitors in the town centre have only been able to catch glimpses of the construction work through the fenced areas, but a new aerial image shot by a drone shows the extent of the ongoing demolition. The photo, which was taken in late March, shows that a significant amount of the building has been carefully removed to make way for the new modern homes.
The site is an empty shell of what used to be a thriving town centre store, but it is expected that the new homes will be ready for summer 2025. This development is one of many projects being funded by the Newark Town Board's successful application to the Government’s Towns Fund initiative, and is hoped to bring new life into the town.
Another project benefitting from the funding is the £3m restoration of Newark Castle and a £2.1m Cultural Heart project, which hopes to provide varied and exciting events in the town.
