Robert Cameron Johnston received the award in December 2020

A former Merseyside youth leader has had his MBE stripped from him. Robert Cameron Johnston was made a Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire on December 31, 2020 for services to young people in his role as northern regional director at the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award . Mr Johnston, who the ECHO understands was based in Liverpool while he was in the role, left the DofE in August 2020. His award came four months later.

The ECHO approached the Cabinet Office for clarification on why Mr Johnston has been stripped of the honour, but a spokesperson said the office would not comment on individual cases. As such, the reason for the decision is unknown. The Cabinet Office website states that honours can be withdrawn from those who have brought the system into disrepute. A decision to forfeit an honour can be based on events prior to the award or conduct after it was given.
