A large fire at a former NHS health center that caused a main road closure for two days is suspected to have been started intentionally. Fire crews responded to the former Hesketh Centre site, situated at the junction of Albert Road and Park Road West in Southport , around 2:46 am on November 16. The upper floor and roof of the building were consumed by flames. People in the surrounding area were advised to keep their windows and doors closed while firefighters battled the blaze.
Albert Road remained closed for two days. The fire service has confirmed that the fire is believed to have been started deliberately. A spokesperson for Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service told the ECHO: 'A joint investigation between Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service and Merseyside Police has taken place which indicates that this fire was deliberate.' 'A Merseyside Police investigation is ongoing.' In 2022, Abandoned UK, a Facebook and YouTube page dedicated to exploring empty buildings, posted a video of the center on its page. During the video, the group extensively explored the building, recording nearly all aspects of it inside. The footage showcased the secure rooms, left untouched since the center's closure, as well as the wards where patients resided. The man recording the video also highlighted the numerous items left behind, with beds, monitors, and chairs all present in the building. Traditional coving could also be seen throughout the building, demonstrating the history of the health center, which is believed to have first opened in 1903. Merseyside Police was contacted for comment
