Kenny MacAskill has renewed demands for the Scottish Government to tax supermarket booze sales in the wake of shocking alcohol death stats.

The former justice secretary challenged First Minister Humza Yousaf to introduce the new levy after it emerged 1276 people died as a direct result of booze last year – the highest level since 2008.Scotland introduced a Minimum Unit Price for alcohol of 50p in 2018. “We know the Minimum Unit Price policy works but it would be far more effective if the minimum price was increased and we also need to stop allowing supermarkets to keep the profits they make as a result.NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde recorded the highest number of deaths with 326.
