A University of Tasmania employee is alleging the former vice-chancellor groped her on three separate occasions without her consent.

A University of Tas mania employee has filed a statement of claim with the Supreme Court of Tas mania, alleging she was assaulted and sexually harassed by former vice-chancellor Peter Rathjen .Former University of Tas mania vice-chancellor Peter Rathjen is being sued by a U TAS employee who claims he groped her on three separate occasions.

The woman is also suing the university, claiming UTAS is vicariously liable for Professor Rathjen's alleged assaults and harassment because it failed to perform due diligence when hiring him, failed to adequately enforce sexual harassment policies, failed to maintain a safe work environment and failed to protect her from assaults and harassment.

UTAS says in the defence document that given Professor Rathjen's alleged conduct was not done in the course or scope of his employment, the university is not vicariously liable. Its court documents say the plaintiff has been provided with a dedicated welfare officer and the services of the university's employee assistance program.Independent Commissioner Against Corruption found he committed "serious misconduct" by sexually harassing two university staff members in 2019
