St Kevin's College in Lisnaskea has launched a free food initiative to combat hunger among its student population. The school has set up a daily breakfast club and a Free Food Bank Fridge, providing students with access to nutritious meals throughout the day.

A school in County Fermanagh is making a difference in the lives of disadvantaged students with a new free food initiative. St Kevin's College in Lisnaskea has implemented a daily breakfast club and a Free Food Bank Fridge, ensuring students have access to nutritious meals throughout the day. The school is located in a rural area, and Principal Gary Kelly states that many of the 750 pupils are facing hardship due to the ongoing financial crisis.

Thanks to a £1,500 grant from Tesco, the school was able to purchase a food bank fridge and stock it with healthy food and snacks. The breakfast club sees over 50 students each day, while the Free Food Bank Fridge is utilized by 200-300 students. The fridge is restocked six times daily, at break and lunch times, and shortly before dismissal, allowing any child struggling to access an evening meal to take food home. Principal Gary Kelly expressed the school's concern: 'We noticed a significant number of children arriving at school each morning without breakfast, and that many pupils were going hungry during the day, as they had no access to a meal at lunchtime.' He added, 'St Kevin’s College’s pupils, parents, staff and governors are delighted with this prize for such wonderful causes at our school. We are so grateful for Tesco’s Stronger Starts scheme so that this provision can continue for 2025.'The Stronger Starts scheme, in collaboration with the Groundwork charity, aims to support numerous community projects and good causes across Northern Ireland in the coming years. Claire De Silva, Head of Community at Tesco, stated: “We’re delighted that we can help schools like St Kevin’s College. Stronger Starts invites our customers to use their blue tokens to vote for local schemes they feel will benefit people of all ages, and it’s so good to see the impact that the funding makes.” She encouraged shoppers to contribute to their local schools and charities by depositing their Tesco blue token, received at checkout, into the designated voting box upon leaving the store.
