From immigration to home ownership, smoking to birth rates, the data that reveals how we really lived this year
across the globe, people worldwide have struggled with inflation and slow economic growth, and – perhaps because of this – in the biggest election year in global history, voters have rejected incumbents.
UK renewable electricity generation has increased fivefold since 2010, according to the Office of National Statistics, with onshore and offshore wind dominating as the main sources. In every region, only 2 per cent of staff said they wanted more work on-site, while between half and two-thirds want more remote working time, suggesting the great remote working stand-off will continue.
One of very few ‘good’ things about the pandemic was that the UK’s roads were unusually quiet. But five years on, and despite the advent of remote working, the roads are worse than they’ve ever been – the typical journey is now delayed a full 12 minutes. This is thought to be due, in part, to roadworks relating to the retrofitting of 150 emergency stopping areas on smart motorways .
