Construction crews will be installing steel girders for the I-35 Northeast Expansion project.
Although drivers on Loop 1604 on the Northwest Side aren’t expected to face a major closure this weekend, those on the Northeast Side will be dealing with even bigger traffic headaches than usual thanks to the Interstate 35 construction project. The Texas Department of Transportation will be closing both west- and eastbound main lanes of Loop 1604 at the interchange with I-35 , starting at 9 p.m. Friday. The shutdown will last through 5 a.m. Monday, weather permitting.
TxDOT scales down Loop 1604 closures for summer TxDOT recently installed the first set of steel girders as part of I-35 NEX Central, according to the latest monthly newsletter for the project. The six girders extend from Nacogdoches Road east to Lookout Road along the eastbound Loop 1604 frontage road. The girders sit above the Union Pacific Railroad tracks. Steel girders are used in place of concrete beams for longer spans between the bridge columns supporting the elevated lanes, TxDOT said.
