The DWP is due to pay out a one-off Winter Fuel Payment to millions of people in the run up to winter - here's who can get it and how you can apply for it
This year, millions of people on specific benefits are set to receive a financial boost from the Department of Work and Pensions to help with heating costs. However, a significant change in government policy will drastically alter who qualifies for the Winter Fuel Payment this year, reducing access for many pensioners.
Labour's strategy is to introduce means-testing to narrow down the recipient base for the Winter Fuel Payment, an award that can reach up to £300. Last year, every pensioner automatically qualified for this one-time transfer, which typically starts hitting accounts in November. But under the current policy, only those on Pension Credit or certain other entitlements will receive the money this season. You can qualify for a Winter Fuel Payment this year if you were born before 23rd September 1958 and live in Scotland, England, or Wales while receiving one of the specified benefits.
