The government has been warned that it could be condemning 1.6 million pensioners to a winter of 'heat or eat'
Pension experts have pinpointed the 1.6 million pensioners who will be most affected by the decision to scrap the Winter Fuel Payment worth up to £300. Specialists at Lane Clark & Peacock have worked out that there are around 1.9 million pensioners in the UK earning less than 60 percent of the national average income, a figure often used as a poverty line.
Despite these increases, Age Concern and fuel poverty campaigners have warned that the loss of the Winter Fuel Payment could be fatal for some elderly, sick and vulnerable individuals who can't afford to heat their homes this winter. The Conservatives have criticised the decision to scrap the Winter Fuel Payment.
